Due to an internal push and server end-of-life it was time to migrate Jira Server to Cloud
Lack of team capacity and an aggressive workload
Successful Migration to Cloud
A company within the automotive industry with a mission to become mobility's leading software and systems technologies integrator is accomplishing goals like the longest automated vehicle drive and acquiring a forward-thinking technology company, this company is growing at a substantial rate.
With the sunset of Jira Server coming quickly, many organizations have either begun to discuss or have already taken action to make the move over to Cloud. Since they were challenged with a lack of team capacity and an aggressive workload, the team looked to E7 Solutions for a guide in making the journey successful. “One of our biggest push-points to decision-makers was that we would have to migrate sooner or later,” said Ryan, System Administrator. “[Our] organization is structured in a way where we are already utilizing several cloud-based services, so it fits nicely.”
The implementation was a big move for team members, but they were able to adapt quickly. “It was a big change for our users as well as for training and documentation,” said Ryan. “Other than the new login process, it wasn’t much different from what we are used to. Cloud features are very similar, and navigating the new menus is pretty intuitive.” With this migration, E7 Solutions was able to reduce this company's Atlassian Cloud footprint by leaving behind marketplace apps that were replaced with native functionality.
As working toward the cloud migration began to take its course, the teams started to see the bigger picture. Atlassian Cloud is designed to unleash the full potential of teams - and help ALL teams connect to deliver value fast. From automated security updates to ticket submission and integrations, they found features like Sandbox to be “very helpful and useful.”
Structure by Tempo was one of the many apps E7 Solutions migrated into Atlassian Cloud. Structure is a flexible tool used for Jira Portfolio and Project Management needs that provides work across teams, projects, and time in status in just one view. “Structure is easy to migrate using the JCMA tool,” said Collin Byrnes, Agile Project Manager at E7 Solutions.
Cloud offers more integrated features and functionality. In our old environment, we had a large number of licensed applications, and with cloud, we are able to use its native functionality to streamline and consolidate some of our applications, which offers a better experience for the administrators and the users.
Working with E7 helped our timeline. Without E7, we would not have been able to complete [the migration] in the time that the business needed.
Building a strong relationship and understanding of the client’s needs and E7 Solutions' deliverables resulted in a foundation that supported the success of the project. “One of our teammates, Eric, introduced us to E7 Solutions and has had a relationship with Michael (Busness Development for years,” said Ryan. “With the anticipation that we would eventually migrate, Michael and his side of the team were very welcoming, responsive, and helpful as we took our time getting sign-off. While working with Collin and his team, they were also very responsive whenever we asked questions and were quick in getting things looked at and done.”
Some teams have found use in Kanban and Scrum boards, while others find the filters for dashboards to be helpful. Specifically, the service management team is taking advantage of the ability to manage tickets with ease. “Tickets are submitted by issue type [and are] used by data analysts,” said Ryan.
With services provided by the E7 team and both teams working collaboratively, they were able to feel the positive impact of being in Atlassian Cloud, including peace of mind around maintenance, improved speed and accessibility, and lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
Overall, major benefits have been realized by the team - from security updates being a huge timesaver to the sandbox providing them the ability to test environments and modify workflows. “Cloud offers more integrated features and functionality,” said Ryan. “In our old environment, we had a large number of licensed applications, and with cloud, we are able to use its native functionality to streamline and consolidate some of our applications, which offers a better experience for the administrators and the users.” Not to mention, they were able to stay on track with support from E7 Solutions. “Working with E7 helped our timeline. Without E7, we would not have been able to complete [the migration] in the time that the business needed.”
